For a roof replacement in Palm Coast and Flagler Beach, ask the contractor to identify the proposed underlayment and explain how it fits the roof covering, slope and installation requirements.
As you may know, Florida is the sunshine state. That means it receives some of the highest amounts of sun in the United States. Additionally, Florida is ranked number two for having the most lightning strikes per square mile.
So, to withstand the high UV rays, major thunderstorms, and dangerous lightning strikes, you need durable roofs that are fire-resistant and built to withstand significant storms. Let’s discuss a common type of roof underlayment installed on Florida homes.
Do Florida Roof Underlayment Provide UV Protection?
If you’re like most Floridians, you are used to receiving lots of sun at home. In fact, Florida has more sunshine than any other state in the country- almost 300 days per year! With significant exposure to UV rays, Florida homes do better with some roofing materials than others.
Having a quality roof underlayment that protects your home from significant UV exposure while under construction or during a re-roof is a great idea. One such product is Titanium UDL. Titanium UDL is a high-performance roofing underlayment made of single-ply, bitumen roofing membrane laminated to a polyester facer. It’s UV-resistant and has a Class A fire rating. The synthetic polymer facer prevents UV degradation while still allowing heat to escape below the roof deck's surface. This can help keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter without accumulating moisture on your roof.
Titanium UDL is an excellent choice for Florida residents because it lasts longer and is more durable than other types of roofing underlayments, such as 30# asphalt impregnated felt, when exposed to UV rays. It can also withstand heavy rains, high winds, and hail strikes, all common weather conditions in Florida. In addition to being fire-safe, titanium roof underlayments are:
- Leakproof- These roofing sheets are 100% waterproof, preventing moisture and water damage to your home if you live in a part of Florida with heavy rains and hurricanes.
- Windproof- They’re also made from reinforced steel mesh designed to withstand strong gusts exceeding 100 MPH.
- Hail-resistant- Titanium UDL is also resistant to hail. The rigid material on top of these roof underlayments will keep them from denting if hail rips through your area.
Florida Roofs and Lightning Storms
It’s not just how much sunlight Florida homes get that needs to be considered when installing a roof. Florida is ranked number two in the nation for lightning strikes per square mile. According to the NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory, Florida averages one strike every two minutes during a thunderstorm. That’s a significant risk of having your home struck by lightning.
Metal roofs and copper tile roofing are excellent options for homes exposed to significant lightning strikes. The materials have also been tested in hurricane zones to ensure they can withstand heavy winds and rain. Metal roofs are also great because they are fire-resistant, which can save your property if your roof is struck by lightning. The recent harsh weather brought on by natural disasters has actually led to numerous insurance firms reducing their coverage.
